Whole Patient Initiative

The whole patient initiative is dedicated to raising awareness in the medical field about not just treating an aspect of a disease, but to view their patient, the patient's family and their patient community holistically.

That means taking into consideration contributing factors that can affect both the physical and emotional well being of the patient and patient family. Many of the very serious conditions treated at large hospitals affect not only patients but the entire family ecosystem. Understanding how the family dynamic contributes to better or worse patient outcomes is essential.

This includes emotional well being, diet and nutrition, physical activity and exercise, sleep, environmental factors, genetic considerations, faith and spirituality, social connections and of course direct patient medical care. Each of these areas can have a profound impact on the quality of life for both the patient and their family.

An important part of creating a home wellness environment is making sure that the patient's caregiver — most often a parent — is given the emotional support necessary to manage the enormous weight of caring for a child with a serious illness. Parents frequently sacrifice their own mental and physical health to prioritize their child's medical needs, leading to burnout, depression, and strained family relationships.

In addition, we recognize that medical therapies are only one part of the care continuum. Holistic wellbeing requires attention to the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of both the patient and the broader family unit. When healthcare providers understand and address these interconnected needs, patient adherence to treatment improves and overall family resilience strengthens.

The whole patient initiative is a way for healthcare providers, researchers, and support organizations to collaborate on delivering care that treats the person — not just the diagnosis. By integrating emotional support into routine medical care, we can build a system that truly serves every dimension of a patient's life.

Supporting the Whole Patient Community

Not every Duchenne family has access to the resources, education, or emotional support infrastructure that many larger medical centers provide. Families in rural areas, families with limited English proficiency, and families without insurance or financial means face compounding barriers that isolate them from the care and community they desperately need. Our goal is to ensure that no family is left behind — regardless of geography, income, or circumstance.

Family & Community

Holistic care that includes the entire family unit.
